What has the Mayor been doing?

The Mayors Report on January 23, 2012 stated:

January 11 - I attended a seminar on the RCMP contract sponsored by the UBCM

January 13 - met with Peggy Hunt and Shirley Samush from Translink.

January 13 - discussed an idea for a Tour BC cycling ride to raise money for cancer. Organizers are in the preliminary stages of planning but are thinking they'd like to start and end the ride in White Rock possibly in July or August.

January 17 - Council held an all-day Planning Session with members of Senior Management. Good exchange of information and priorities to form a base as we begin to formulate the plans for the coming year and the next three years.

January 18 -attended a meeting of Translink's Mayor's Council on Regional Transportation. Richard Walton, Mayor of North Vancouver, was elected Chair of this Council, with Peter Fassbender, Mayor of Langley, the Vice-Chair.

January 19 - received an interesting suggestion from a White Rock resident to develop relations with a twin-or sister-city, in China.

January 19 - met with Brian Atkins, District Manager, Transportation for the Lower Mainland. He has agreed with our staff and Tourism White Rock to add "Service" and "Attraction" signage on the highway - signage will refer to waterfront, tourist accomodation and restaurants in White Rock.
He also agreed to determine plans for the expansion of the Park and Ride at King George Boulevard and Highway 99.

January 23 - attended a meeting of the Fraser Health Municipal Government Advisory Council. There are now surgical wait lists on the Fraser Health website that the public can access.

Just received word today that Cliff Annable will be taking over later this week from Doug Hart as Executive Director for the South Surrey Chamber of Commerce. We wish Cliff and the Chamber good luck for the coming year and thank them for the services they provide to White Rock and local businesses.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Chinese New Year today or Gung Hei Fat Choi.

Mayor Watts’ stance on the public school system is a bit forward and, at some times, controversial. She feels that the traditional school infrastructure (big, costly brick buildings that cannot expand or contract to fit population and budgetary needs) are outdated. Instead, Watts envisions a modular education system as the backbone of the Surrey of the future. By using modular school units (what some wrongly label “trailer schools”) the city can not only provide plenty of learning space to all of the students and teachers but it can do so cost-effectively. Mobile units are able to quickly relocate if the population of an area increases and the demand for classrooms follows. Conversely, if the population of an area declines, there’s no sense in having a massive brick building sucking up city funds when a modular school design could be minimized to fit the student body.

The previously unused rooftop of the Oxford washroom is now accessible to the public as a viewing area.The new design of the Balsam washroom allows for half of the facility to be closed during the winter months when usage is lower which provides savings in maintenance, staffing and overhead costs. Centennial Park Leisure Centre and Kent Street Activity Centre In 2011, major renovations were made to two community centres. At Centennial Park Leisure Centre this included upgrades and improvements to the ramp entrance, flooring, doors, paint, signage, telephone systems, and a fibre optic connection to City Hall. Miramar Plaza Events for 2012
The special events held in Miramar Plaza are important for building community spirit. They also attract tourists to the area and have an economic impact for the surrounding businesses.

The Miramar Plaza area is owned by the two adjoining strata. The City does not have ownership
but does have a statutory right of way through that area. For the City to hold events in Miramar
Plaza, they must have Council approval.

The purpose of this report is to seek endorsement for three events.

City of White Rock staff met with Miramar strata representatives in early December and it was
agreed that any time a road closure along Russell Ave. was required for an above mentioned
special event, it was imperative that the closure did not block the front entrance to 15152 Russell
or the entry to the underground parking. This was included in the Miramar Plaza Use Guidelines
that were drafted in 2011.

During 2011 there were two events held in the Miramar Village open space.

White Rock Farmer’s Market (May – Oct)

Christmas on the Peninsula (Nov)

During 2012 there are three events that are being recommended to be held in the Miramar
Village open space and they are:

Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay End of Day Celebration (May 19)

White Rock Farmers’ Market (May – Oct)

Christmas on the Peninsula (Nov 24)

These three events will take place in the open area on the east and west side of Russell Mews
between the two Miramar Village towers. With the adoption of this recommendation, these
events will be endorsed by the City to take place in the Miramar Village Plaza in 2012.

Recommendation: Approve

New Event Applications for 2012

1. Pooch Parade on the Promenade

Sunday April 22nd , 2012 9:00am – 1:00pm (set-up 8am, takedown 2pm)

Organizer: Winston Conyers, member of Rotary Club of White Rock Peninsula

Dog friendly event, allowing dog owners to walk their dogs along the promenade from
Bayview Park (far end of West Beach) to end of East Beach promenade.

Considerations:
 Fundraising event for local Rotary Club projects, Semiahmoo Animal League
 Requesting dogs on leash access to the Promenade and the grass area between
Bayview Park and Museum for vendor tents
 Previous application for 2011 was not approved.

Organizers successfully ran this event at South Surrey Athletic Park in 2011 and did
not have any clean-up problems/issues.
 Post event “doggy clean-up” provided by event sponsor
 Event requires temporary non-enforcement of City Bylaw 1161 which prohibits dogs
from walking on the Promenade.
Although Bylaw 1161 prohibits dogs from walking on the Promenade, whether or not to
continue with this is an issue now under discussion in the community. Approving this event
may set a precedent Council may not be comfortable with. However, the decline in activity
on the waterfront during the off-season months is also a concern. This was raised most
recently to Council by the Business Improvement Association. Allowing this April event
could help stimulate business along the waterfront during the off-season. As this event is for
a good cause, at a time when there is a desire to increase waterfront activity and did not have
any clean up issues last year in South Surrey, Council may wish to approve it and evaluate it
afterwards. (Council in the past has allowed commercial activity to take place on the
promenade that was not in compliance with the OCP for Spirit of the Sea). Another option is
to direct staff to work with the organizer to find another location in the City for this event.

Recommendation: Provide staff with direction on this event..

2. Staff have received an application for a 2nd new special event in the City but more research is
required before a recommendation can be brought to Council. Staff will report in due course
on this application.

BUDGET IMPLICATIONS:
Costs for these events are to be paid for by the event organizers, which may include corporate
sponsorship. Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay End of Day Celebration is the exception. This
special event was brought forward in 2011 and Council directed staff to proceed with planning
and organizing the 25th Anniversary promotional activities and an End of the Day Celebration.
Council approved the funding request of $1,500 for 2011 from contingency and that $8,500 be
considered in the 2012 Financial Plan process for this event.

OPTIONS
It is recommended THAT Council:
1) receives the information from the January 23, 2012 report from the Acting Director of
Leisure Services titled “Special Events for 2012”
2) approves the following events to be located on the open space on the east and west side
of Russell Mews on the Miramar Village plaza for 2012:
a) Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay End of Day Celebration (May 19)
b) White Rock Farmers Market (May 27 – October 7)
c) Christmas on the Peninsula (November 24); and
3) provides staff with direction on the Pooch Parade event on the promenade..

CONCLUSION
The City of White Rock recognizes that special events are an important part of living in White
Rock and provide an affordable entertainment to its citizens. It also recognizes that special
events enhance tourism, culture, and recreation, while providing an economic benefit to...

businesses in the City. However, it is equally important that the City is clear and consistent with
respect to its bylaws.

Extracting natural gas from shale could do more to aggravate global warming than mining coal, according to a Cornell study by Dr. Robert Howarth that was published in the May issue of Climatic Change Letters (105:5).

While natural gas has been touted as a clean-burning fuel that produces less carbon dioxide than coal, ecologist Robert Howarth from Cornell University warns that we should be more concerned about methane leaking into the atmosphere during hydraulic fracturing.

Natural gas is mostly methane (CH4), which is a much more potent greenhouse gas, especially in the short term, than carbon dioxide (CO2). Join Robert Howarth and BCSEA moderator Guy Dauncey for a Webinar on this topic.

Wayne Baldwin has the right attitude to be a great mayor for White Rock.

As a member of city council, I worked alongside Mr.Baldwin when he was the city manager.

There was a long list of things that we disagreed on. This could have been a barrier. It could have prevented us from being constructive in our service to citizens. However, he had an approach to problem-solving that I began to call the “Baldwin Road Map to Yes.”

Even when he thought an idea wouldn’t work, he wouldn’t judge or try to stop me from pursuing it. Instead, he would ask questions and share information on the issue. The challenges would be explained so that I knew what needed to be done to reach my goal. He wouldn’t say “no,” he would say, “yes, if.”

We would create a Road Map to Yes. With a map to guide me, I understood what potential problems had to be addressed. Sometimes I didn’t reach my goal – either because the concept was impractical or the challenges insurmountable – but for other initiatives, we were able to accomplish some very significant improvements for the residents of White Rock.

This is the kind of attitude I want in a mayor. Someone who is open-minded enough to listen to crazy ideas. Someone who doesn’t say no, but asks why and how. Someone who listens, fits what he hears into the big picture, and then translates it into action.

Rinse.

Steaming
It is usually not necessary to steam more than twice weekly.. Heat up water in a kettle on the stove and remove before turning into a boil.

Your Face’ Steam Bath.
Take the bowl. Place the bowl on the table and fill it with the heated water.
Sit down at the table with your face over the bowl and a towel over your head. ‘Make a tent’ over your head and face.

Keep your face at a comfortable distance from the hot steaming water in the bowl; not so close you hurt from the heat, but not too far away so that no results are achieved.
The point being that the steam should and will open the pores of your skin.

Once the steam bath of the face is finished, gently use a mild soap and rinse your face with lukewarm water and a wash cloth. Dry and then you are ready for the next step.

Further Explanation to White Rock Salary Issues

My letter to the Peace Arch News editor was mentioned, but not printed as originally written. While I appreciate their willingness to broadcast the concerns I have over the salary issues mentioned, I want to explain some things a little bit more. Here we go ...

RE: EX-MANAGER KNOCKS WAGES

On Sept 13 the PAN printed an article, attached to this blog, based on a letter which I had submitted to the Editor on Sept 2. While the article somewhat captures the sense of the letter it does not truly represent my concerns. To a degree , it comes off as a "sour grapes" kind of rant which was not my intent.

My real concern is that this Council does not appear to know what it is doing and is making decisions without really understanding the ramifications of the decision. This salary discussion was just one example of that.

In the letter, I pointed out that the City Manager was hired in 2006, at an agreed upon rate of $140,000 annually which could be revised at the discretion of Council. For 2007 she received $149,988. In 2008 she received $153,912. For 2009 she jumped way up to $180,917 and jumped again for 2010 to $194,535 (of which some portion was cash in lieu of time off). This represents an increase of $54,535 in annual salary (39%) in just four years.

By way of comparison, the pay for the Surrey City Manager went from $250,334 in 2007, to $252,913 in 2008, and $265,962 in 2009. For some reason it actually dropped in 2010 to $263,085. So over 4 years there was an increase of about $15,600 annually or 6%.

Another , more relevant comparator, would be the City of Port Moody's City Manager. Port Moody is the closest to White Rock in population in Metro Vancouver. In 2007, their CM received $154,272 and in 2008 he got $158,208. By 2009 it had risen to $167,593. For some reason in 2010 he received only $161,807. Over the comparable 4 years (and using the maximum spread) he had an increase of only about $9000 or about 6%.

So, the question has to be asked why would Surrey's City Manager and Port Moody's City Manager receive wage increases of 6% while White Rock's City Manager goes up by nearly 40%? Moreover, why would we pay our City Manager $30,000 more annually than the somewhat larger City of Port Moody pays theirs?

Notwithstanding the City Manager's wages an even more astounding situation exists for the position of Director of Municipal Engineering and Operations.

In February, 2010, the City's Director of Operations left his job to take a job in Langley. Instead of hiring a new Engineer at about $125,000 per year, the City retained a Planner to fill the position on contract until July, 2012. The contract person is paid at the rate of $125/ hr. He doesn't get paid anything if for any reason he is absent. In 10 months in 2010 he was paid $182,883. Nearly $60,000 more than the previous engineer would have been paid for 12 months!

I do not know what he has been paid to date for 2011, but if he takes no vacation and is not sick, he can make about $250,000 - almost what the Surrey City Manager would take home. It could be much higher with overtime which is doled out at the discretion of the City Manager. This is roughly $125,000 more per year than the City would have paid a qualified employee.

So here's the point of the exercise:

If those two were paid in the range they should be, the City would have saved in the order of $150,000 in taxes in 2011. That is nearly 1% off your taxes !

The Engineering advice being given to City Council on infrastructure problems and policies is coming from a Planner not an Engineer. That is kind of like getting advice about how to fix your home's shorted out electrical circuit from a landscaper rather than an electrician.

So, as I said it came off sounding a bit like sour grapes or even a National Enquirer expose. In fact, it is all about knowing what you are doing and having a Council that is knowledgeable and spends the money we entrust them with wisely and with care.

"Can painting improve your health?"

July 8, 2011

Dear Johan,

Yesterday, Donna MacDonald of Calgary, Alberta wrote, "Is there a possibility
that painting might improve your health? I've suffered from chronic migraines
for over 30 years and I've noticed an amazing phenomenon. On the days that I
paint I don't get a migraine! At first I thought it was a coincidence but after
close observation to the timing it's become evident that there's a correlation.
I started painting full time 5 years ago and it has literally changed my life!
Have you heard of this?"

Thanks, Donna.

Migraines are one of the most frequently reported maladies of
artists. So when you mentioned you don't have them when you're painting, it
was music to my ears. Migraines are still not fully understood by the medical
profession. There are several main types, and adult women are three times more
likely to have them as adult men. "Triggers" like stress, hunger, drink, diet
and bright or moving lights can set them off. Apparently, a neurotransmitter
called serotonin plays a role. Low serotonin levels in the brain may lead to
constriction of blood vessels. Serotonergic agonists like triptins, LSD or
psilocin can activate serotonin receptors to stop a migraine.

Many painters find painting to be a leveling sanctuary in an otherwise frantic
world. Perhaps it's because of the heightened involvement, challenge, and
attention to detail that painting requires. Fact is, many of us attest to
"feeling no pain" while painting. While the act of painting may not perk up
your depleted serotonin, it may release something I'm calling "muselocin." This
is the nice stuff you feel when you're finding your muse.

Yes, others have reported to me that it's important to anticipate a good day
rather than a bad one. The potentially afflicted artist needs to set up,
squeeze out, choose the right background music and, with a tall glass of cold
water, start to work. After a few minutes, mildly hypnotized by the job at
hand, the painter-patient becomes pleasantly "lost."

I can't attest to great gushes of good goo being released into the blood, but
artists tell me they feel like something magic is happening. The élan of
painterly process and ongoing accomplishment certainly eats time. It may just
head off pain as well. Back problems, anxiety and arthritis also respond to this
underutilized and inexpensive drug.

A devastated Vancouver Canucks hockey team 'ran out of gas' trying to penetrate an iron wall and emotional curtain of persistent brown bears...the Bruins from Boston.

From the outset one could tell that game #7 the final in Stanley Cup held in Vancouver, would be a disaster.

No visualization and imagination in the Vancouver team...playing straight ice hockey of model 'ball room' hockey.

Wrong tactics to beat Bruins.

Bear spray would have sufficed but not allowed on the ice.

The bruins were just to focused on winning.

Dragging families and friends [ 'a fly-in' to Boston ] for game #6 [another defeat,] into the arena in Boston was sort of 'taking out a victory in advance' and irritated the bears..now today coming back to settle a final score in Vancouver this memorable day of 15th June 2011.

One doesn't bring the families into a 'war-zone' per se. Instead focus on the 'enemy to defeat' should be the essence of the visit in Boston for Game #6.

Thank you Vancouver Canucks for a great play-off season. Great hockey,,,and please come again. The team with the luckiest and best fitted netminder [goalie] did the trick for the winner. The Boston Bruins [brown bears] should be congratulated. So we all do!

Yesterday, Janet Badger of Bangor, Maine wrote, "You speak often of your dog,
your faithful studio companion. We've owned several dogs over the years but I've
found them to be like having a toddler around--you have to know where they are
and what they are doing at all times.
As a printmaker, I need my focus and concentration, to work without distraction. Is there a perfect breed of studio dog?
I think I need a quiet companion, though we can all benefit from morning
and evening walks. It's my husband who thinks we should have one again, despite
the expense. Can someone who lives happily without a dog learn to live happily
with one?"

Thanks, Janet. Dogs are angels sent from heaven to make us into better people.
A few minutes of petting a dog releases oxytocins into the bloodstream of both
dog and human, reducing stress and lowering blood pressure. Dog people may live
longer.

Every puppy begins in joy and ends in tears. Sometime ago I wrote about the loss
of our former dog, Emily. The email condolences that came in here were
overwhelming. As far as I'm concerned there are two downsides to having a dog.
The first is when you finally lose them, and the second, an ongoing problem, is
what to do with them when they can't travel with you. Lining up trusted dog
sitters is vital.

Having said that, a dog will increase your studio hours and prevent you from
wandering off and getting into trouble. Benjamin Franklin said that in order to
be happy a man needs "a good woman, a good dog, and ready money." I've noted
that none of my dogs have ever criticized my work. A loving tail-wagger in the
studio goes a long way in a profession of loners.

For an assessment of breed appropriateness, intelligence and size considerations,
you might read Dr Stanley Coren's "The Intelligence of Dogs." I happen to think
that dog people are the best people, perhaps because dogs, just like artists,
have excellent dreams and fantasies.
But there are cat people too, and they are just as passionately converted. Gerbils, weasels and rats do it for some folks, particularly as starters. You have a good husband--I think you should also have a good dog. Forget about the ready money.

Esoterica: Dorothy the Airedale has a particularly spirited personality. Good
for my cardiovascular, she is always eager to go for a walk. Uniquely, she is
also content to play ball with herself. She is a happy girl, rather overly
bonded but universally friendly. She's fully employed patrolling our property
but unfortunately gets poor marks for squirrel and mole control. An occasional
garden digger, as I write this she is curled up with dirty feet in a pile of
paint rags. To her credit, she steps carefully around paintings when they are
casually thrown here and there.

Seems like everyone has an account and they're using it for everything from promoting their blogs to notifying their friends that they just became mayor of the cereal aisle in their local supermarket. But can you really use Twitter as an effective business tool or is its reported relevance a bunch of fluff?

Answer/Comment JS: Spontaneously I say its ‘reported relevancy’ is just that...a bunch of fluff. And it holds true if you do not manage your Twitter professionally. To do just that you need to know more and educate yourself on the topic, I call : “Jitter, Twitter and Bitter”. It is not as easy as one may think

That all depends on how you approach the service""just like anything else, Twitter is what you make out of it. Most of the people who say Twitter is useless as a selling tool are blindly posting links hoping folks will click on them. They're destined to fail.

Debbie Carney has her fingers on the pulse of Twitter. I sat down with her and discussed the pros and cons of using the service. She cautions that Twitter is not a one-way street.

Now here in this letter I read words and sentences from Robert's daughter and you must understand that this is in part what I could perhaps as a 'soul-minder' wish I could deliver to each my own two children... 24 [son in Stockholm]] and 44 [daughter in Maui].
It is beautifully written and spoken by Sara, Robert's daughter, and painting partner..it's both intimate and personal and all full of a daughters love and admiration and family bonds..of gratitude to a man and father still living and vibrantly producing art..part of memories forever. A salute to a loving father expressed by daughter Sara.

Sit back and read and think and absorb..sense the sensitivity and angst and wondering in the writers words. Words seeking for more answers and hoping life never will end...I can relate to the situation but viewed from the 'other side' sort of. Anyway here it is ...Enjoy,

Dear Johan,

Last Saturday night, Carol gave me a great big birthday party. Among the fourteen
friends who spoke was my daughter Sara. Here, in part, is what she said:

"I have a memory from my childhood, of walking with my dad, somewhere in Brittany.
I was about eleven. We were talking about the Post-Impressionists, about waiting
all day for the best painting light--the magic hour. It was one of my firsts--my
first recollection of our first conversation on a subject my dad and I are still
working on.

I remember how we walked together side by side, his ideas tumbling out
like paving stones on a path in front of me. Sure, he had given me a journal and a
camera, he'd even ordered for me my first endive salad. But it was our back and
forth that etched the journey."

"There's a more recent memory of following my dad up a snow-patched slope in Yoho
Park in the Rocky Mountains. I mimicked his pace and frequent stops, and carried
his lemonade and sandwiches. He paused at every detail of nature. 'Bracket Fungi.'
'Clarke's Nutcracker.' 'Indian Paintbrush,' 'Moss Campion.'" A moment of panic. I
went cold and looked up into the larches.

How on earth was I going to get the
entire contents of my dad's brain into my own brain before the end of our allotted
time? The task felt colossal and ultimately hopeless. I overtook him on the path so
as to better hear his classifications bubbling up behind me. After a few moments of
silent walking I heard him say, 'You have my good calves.'"

"Once, we bought a bunch of books in a new-age bookshop. There was one called,
"Stoking the Creative Fires" by San Francisco author Phil Cousineau. It's an
anthology of quotes by historical artists designed to inspire new generations--
making sense of how to be creative. When tackling the fine art of building a
creative life, however, the author quotes his own grandfather: 'Step by step, a
path; stone by stone, a cathedral.'"

of dad's beloved, immoveable painting subjects, he's shown me how to kneel at the

was on 20th Street in New York and he was on Beckett Road in Surrey, British
Columbia. He was asking me what I was up to. I was painting my usual broad
strokes. He said to me, 'Sara, you are capable of doing anything you bloody well
want.' That's pretty well dad's message to everybody."

In part one of this report I revealed the original name of
Google,
the grand daddy of search engines. They called it
*backrub*
because backlinks were critical to assigning rankings.

But
soon the word got out and many online marketers pounced on this
*secret* to
gain a competitive advantage.

It wasn't long before sites set up *link
swapping* as a quick and
easy way to get a backlinks. (lots of them) However,
this didn't
last long because Google's engineers were determined to filter
out
*low value* content, especially when it was obvious that *link
farms*,
as they called it, were corrupting their original intent:
each link was a
*vote*.

However, Google did not throw out the baby with the
bathwater.

What they did, though, was scrutinize more closely the true
nature
of any backlinks they found.

They looked at factors such

- are the links embedded in a *quality* article
- are the links on
unique servers?
- are the *linked* pages relevant to each other?
- is the
link embedded within an article or is it sitting there as
part of a cluster
of URLs?

These days their algorithms are so smart, due to advances
in
*artificial intelligence*, that they can tell if articles are
written
by robots or humans, (even whether content is written by a
native speaker or
not).

In other words, it is no use trying to outsmart Google.

Today, more than ever they want to see links embedded is well
written
content posted on trusted sites within their database using
meaningful anchor
text.

Aspartame:
What You Don't Know Can Hurt You
Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods.
Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.
Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W. Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle's research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.
Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.
According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.
Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame under the category of "chemical poison." As you shall see, that is exactly what it is.
What Is Aspartame Made Of?
Aspartic Acid (40 percent of Aspartame)
Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, recently published a book thoroughly detailing the damage that is caused by the ingestion of excessive aspartic acid from aspartame. Blaylock makes use of almost 500 scientific references to show how excess free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid (about 99 percent of monosodium glutamate (MSG) is glutamic acid) in our food supply are causing serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms.
How Aspartate (and Glutamate) Cause Damage
Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.
Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins) it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.
The blood brain barrier (BBB), which normally protects the brain from excess glutamate and aspartate as well as toxins, 1) is not fully developed during childhood, 2) does not fully protect all areas of the brain, 3) is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions, and 4) allows seepage of excess glutamate and aspartate into the brain even when intact.
The excess glutamate and aspartate slowly begin to destroy neurons. The large majority (75 percent or more) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure to excitatory amino acid damage include:
Multiple sclerosis (MS)
ALS
Memory loss
Hormonal problems
Hearing loss
Epilepsy
Alzheimer's disease
Parkinson's disease
Hypoglycemia
AIDS
Dementia
Brain lesions
Neuroendocrine disorders
The risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems and mimics the FDA party-line, recently stated in a review that:
"It is prudent to avoid the use of dietary supplements of L-glutamic acid by pregnant women, infants, and children. The existence of evidence of potential endocrine responses, i.e., elevated cortisol and prolactin, and differential responses between males and females, would also suggest a neuroendocrine link and that supplemental L-glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age and individuals with affective disorders."
Aspartic acid from aspartame has the same deleterious effects on the body as glutamic acid.
The exact mechanism of acute reactions to excess free glutamate and aspartate is currently being debated. As reported to the FDA, those reactions include:
Headaches/migraines
Nausea
Abdominal pains
Fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain)
Sleep problems
Vision problems
Anxiety attacks
Depression
Asthma/chest tightness.
One common complaint of persons suffering from the effect of aspartame is memory loss. Ironically, in 1987, G.D. Searle, the manufacturer of aspartame, undertook a search for a drug to combat memory loss caused by excitatory amino acid damage. Blaylock is one of many scientists and physicians who are concerned about excitatory amino acid damage caused by ingestion of aspartame and MSG.
A few of the many experts who have spoken out against the damage being caused by aspartate and glutamate include Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D., an experimental psychologist specializing in research design. Another is Olney, a professor in the department of psychiatry, School of Medicine, Washington University, a neuroscientist and researcher, and one of the world's foremost authorities on excitotoxins. (He informed Searle in 1971 that aspartic acid caused holes in the brains of mice.)
Phenylalanine (50 percent of aspartame)
Phenylalanine is an amino acid normally found in the brain. Persons with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot metabolize phenylalanine. This leads to dangerously high levels of phenylalanine in the brain (sometimes lethal). It has been shown that ingesting aspartame, especially along with carbohydrates, can lead to excess levels of phenylalanine in the brain even in persons who do not have PKU.
This is not just a theory, as many people who have eaten large amounts of aspartame over a long period of time and do not have PKU have been shown to have excessive levels of phenylalanine in the blood. Excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain can cause the levels of seratonin in the brain to decrease, leading to emotional disorders such as depression. It was shown in human testing that phenylalanine levels of the blood were increased significantly in human subjects who chronically used aspartame.
Even a single use of aspartame raised the blood phenylalanine levels. In his testimony before the U.S. Congress, Dr. Louis J. Elsas showed that high blood phenylalanine can be concentrated in parts of the brain and is especially dangerous for infants and fetuses. He also showed that phenylalanine is metabolised much more effeciently by rodents than by humans.
One account of a case of extremely high phenylalanine levels caused by aspartame was recently published the "Wednesday Journal" in an article titled "An Aspartame Nightmare." John Cook began drinking six to eight diet drinks every day. His symptoms started out as memory loss and frequent headaches. He began to crave more aspartame-sweetened drinks. His condition deteriorated so much that he experienced wide mood swings and violent rages. Even though he did not suffer from PKU, a blood test revealed a phenylalanine level of 80 mg/dl. He also showed abnormal brain function and brain damage. After he kicked his aspartame habit, his symptoms improved dramatically.
As Blaylock points out in his book, early studies measuring phenylalanine buildup in the brain were flawed. Investigators who measured specific brain regions and not the average throughout the brain notice significant rises in phenylalanine levels. Specifically the hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, and corpus striatum areas of the brain had the largest increases in phenylalanine. Blaylock goes on to point out that excessive buildup of phenylalanine in the brain can cause schizophrenia or make one more susceptible to seizures.
Therefore, long-term, excessive use of aspartame may provid a boost to sales of seratonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac and drugs to control schizophrenia and seizures.
Methanol (aka wood alcohol/poison) (10 percent of aspartame)
Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. Some people may remember methanol as the poison that has caused some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.
The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a "food" product such as Jello).
Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic." They recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.
Symptoms from methanol poisoning include headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory lapses, numbness and shooting pains in the extremities, behavioral disturbances, and neuritis. The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems including misty vision, progressive contraction of visual fields, blurring of vision, obscuration of vision, retinal damage, and blindness. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication and causes birth defects.
Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr. Woodrow C. Monte, director of the food science and nutrition laboratory at Arizona State University, "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."
He was so concerned about the unresolved safety issues that he filed suit with the FDA requesting a hearing to address these issues. He asked the FDA to "slow down on this soft drink issue long enough to answer some of the important questions. It's not fair that you are leaving the full burden of proof on the few of us who are concerned and have such limited resources. You must remember that you are the American public's last defense. Once you allow usage (of aspartame) there is literally nothing I or my colleagues can do to reverse the course. Aspartame will then join saccharin, the sulfiting agents, and God knows how many other questionable compounds enjoined to insult the human constitution with governmental approval." Shortly thereafter, the Commissioner of the FDA, Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages, he then left for a position with G.D. Searle's public relations firm.
It has been pointed out that some fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, however, that methanol never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an antidote for methanol toxicity in humans. The troops of Desert Storm were "treated" to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages, which had been heated to over 86 degrees F in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses. Other breakdown products of aspartame such as DKP (discussed below) may also have been a factor.
In a 1993 act that can only be described as "unconscionable," the FDA approved aspartame as an ingredient in numerous food items that would always be heated to above 86 degree F (30 degree C).
Diketopiperazine (DKP)
DKP is a byproduct of aspartame metabolism. DKP has been implicated in the occurrence of brain tumors. Olney noticed that DKP, when nitrosated in the gut, produced a compound that was similar to N-nitrosourea, a powerful brain tumor causing chemical. Some authors have said that DKP is produced after aspartame ingestion. I am not sure if that is correct. It is definitely true that DKP is formed in liquid aspartame-containing products during prolonged storage.
G.D. Searle conducted animal experiments on the safety of DKP. The FDA found numerous experimental errors occurred, including "clerical errors, mixed-up animals, animals not getting drugs they were supposed to get, pathological specimens lost because of improper handling," and many other errors. These sloppy laboratory procedures may explain why both the test and control animals had sixteen times more brain tumors than would be expected in experiments of this length.
In an ironic twist, shortly after these experimental errors were discovered, the FDA used guidelines recommended by G.D. Searle to develop the industry-wide FDA standards for good laboratory practices.
DKP has also been implicated as a cause of uterine polyps and changes in blood cholesterol by FDA Toxicologist Dr. Jacqueline Verrett in her testimony before the U.S. Senate.

"A spiritual event"

Dear Johan,

I'm walking a labyrinth in Sedona, Arizona. I'm repeating the words, "My higher self
is guiding me." As well as thinking of something else, I'm wondering if there's "something else."

Sedona is one of those spiritual hot spots where visitors come for all sorts of body
work, yoga, self-improvement, or guru-inspired transformation. In the USA, this kind
of stuff is a $10 billion-a-year industry.

Sedona is also the place where three fine folks allowed themselves to be cooked to death in a spiritual sauna at the end of a labyrinth. This was at the urging of the now bankrupt and criminally implicated guru James Arthur Ray. If only those folks had been aware of the life-centering force and personal power one gets from the harmless little activity known as painting.

Yep, I'm talking about painting as a spiritual event. The act has something to do
with making a physical tribute--a sort of a visual prayer--honouring the gifts that
surround us and the life we've been given.

Before you hit that delete key or drop a note to say I've gone wonky again, here are
a few observations for those who might be buying my oysters:
Art establishes and makes tangible a time, a place, a thought, an idea.

Art, properly made, enhances and enriches the lives of others.

Art gives an opportunity to endow new life and new meaning into the ordinary.

Art gives an opportunity to design your own world, and, as in your children, create a
significant immortality.

Art is hard-earned work that is its own reward and has a degree of permanence.

Art, because it's so easy to do, and yet so difficult to do well, encourages humility
in the human soul.
